CHICAGO, January 26th, 2023 – As early voting in Chicago’s municipal election begins, the Libertarian Party will be celebrating an important milestone by electing its first candidate in America’s third most populous city. Avondale resident Chris Laurent will serve as a member of the Police District Council in the 14th District after the February 28th election. Laurent was one of two candidates to file petitions for the three-person council last November, which guarantees his election.

“Over the years, my wife and I have noticed the increase in criminal activity mixed with subpar police response,” said Laurent, who works in the legal field and also served in the United States Navy as a Chief Petty Officer. “My profession allows me to have a strong familiarity with the court system and the legal matters that impact us all in our fair city.”

The Police District Councils were formed by a 2021 ordinance by the City of Chicago and “work to improve policing and public safety in the district,” per the City of Chicago’s website. The District Councils along with the citywide Community Commission for Public Safety and Accountability will “bring police officers and Chicago residents together to plan, prioritize, and build mutual trust; strengthen the police accountability system; give Chicagoans a meaningful new role in oversight; and explore and advance alternative effective approaches to public safety,” the website further explains.

“My approach in serving you as a member of the Police District Council is being a present advocate for your concerns and concerns regarding police activity and accountability,” said Laurent.

In addition to Laurent, Libertarians also have activist Justin Tucker running a write-in campaign the for 14th District’s third seat.
